Information on our Exodus 30 oil blend

Excerpt out of the Bible: Exodus 30:22-33:

Exodus 30 Anointing Oil: 22 Then the Lord said to Moses 23 Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels[b] of fragrant calamus, 24 500 shekels of cassia; all according to the sanctuary shekel and a hin[c] of olive oil. 25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. 26 Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, 27 the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense 28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils and the basin with its stand. 29 You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy and whatever touches them will be holy. 30 Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. 31 Say to the Israelites. This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. 32 Do not pour it on anyone else’s body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred and you are to consider it sacred. 33 Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.

General info on our Exodus 30 Anointing Oil Blend

Modern day application of Exodus 30 anointing oil:

It is believed by many modern day Christian churches that every practicing believer in Christ is a priest. This belief is based on the following excerpt from scripture (1 Peter 2:5-9):

“You also as living stones are being built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. € But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation His own special people that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

The anointing oil we sell is based on this scripture and we believe it may be used by any devout Christian in any biblical ritual to consecrate surroundings and anoint believers (Please view ‘Precautions’ below).

We have made these blends commercially available to cut out the needless cost incurred by buying and blending various oils and to make the healing properties of essential oils more easily accessible.

Ancient measurements in modern day units:

Certain research suggests that a Sanctuary Shekel (as mentioned in verse 23 of Exodus 30) was based on a different method of conversion, this being that 20 Gerah made up 1 Sanctuary shekel). One Sanctuary shekel is thought to be around about 12 grams.

Exodus 30: 23 – 500 shekels is probably about 6000 grams (13.22 lb) – Myrrh and Cassia

Exodus 30: 23 – 250 shekels is probably about 3000 grams (6.61 lb) – Calamus and Cinnamon

Exodus 30: 23 – A hin of olive oil is probably 5.7 litres (192.66 fl. oz) of olive oil.

Formulation of our Exodus 30 Anointing blend

The carrier oil and essential oils in this blend have been carefully selected after due consideration was given to the biblical passage regarding its formulation and modern day knowledge of essential oils.

It is a common mistake to assume that the amounts mentioned in Exodus 30 refer to the modern distilled essential oil.

This is incorrect, as the plant material was most probably macerated (infused) in biblical days – an extract of the herb could also have been used.

To use the same recipe today would be very expensive and dangerous – we also do not have access to a proper recipe and ‘according to the Perfumer’s art’ is a rather subjective instruction. We have adapted the recipe as closely as possible, following international guidelines for the safe use of diffused essential oils.

Precautions

WARNINGS

This blend should NOT be used by or on Children and  Pregnant or Nursing mothers.

Only healthy adults (16+ years old) should use this blend.

This blend should only be used on healthy and unbroken skin.

Do not drink.

All three of the essential oils and the oleo resin contained in this blend are considered potentially dangerous when applied topically and we were very careful when creating this blend:

Calamus essential oil contains β-Asorone (potentially carcinogenic) and Methyleugenol (potentially carcinogenic at high doses and a possible skin irritant). We have included this essential oil at the dilution rate specified by IFRA (0.0004), which is a tiny amount. This is to err on the side of safety and to be very careful.

Cinnamon Leaf essential oil: Known to be a skin irritant – we have included this essential oil at a low dilution rate.

Cassia essential oil: Known to be a skin irritant – we have included this essential oil at a very low dilution rate.

Myrrh oleo-resin: Restriction for use in pregnancy – may influence blood flow to the developing baby/foetus (see warnings above). This essential oil was included at a higher dilution rate in our Exodus 30 blend.

The blend may stain fabric, wood and certain metals and plastic. It is suggested that a sample of the material should be tested first. Care should be taken when using the blend as it is oil and will make surfaces slippery.
