Chemical Composition of German Chamomile essential oil

Various chemotypes (CT) of the essential oil are available – this is not an exhaustive list and other types of Chamomile may be found in each of the mentioned countries:

  • α-Bisabolol oxide A/(E)-β-farnesene CT (Egyptian)
  • α-Bisabolol oxide A CT (Egyptian, German, Dutch)
  • α-Bisabolol oxide A/α-bisabolol oxide B CT (Brazilian)
  • Farnesene/chamazulene CT (Bulgarian)
  • α-Bisabolol/(E)-β-farnesene CT (Finnish)
  • α-Bisabolol oxide A/chamazulene CT (German)

A chemotype that has a high (-)-α-bisabolol content should be sourced if using the essential oil for its anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects.

Precautions when using German Chamomile essential oil

There is a theoretical possibility that all chemotypes of this oil may interact with drugs that are metabolised by the CYP2D6 enzyme:

  • Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (eg Donezepil, Tacrine)
  • Adrenalin β-receptor antagonists (eg Alprenolol, Carvedilol, Propranolol)
  • Analgesics, non-opioid (eg Phenacetin)
  • Analgesics, opioid (eg Codeine)
  • Antiarrhythmic drugs – eg Lidocaine (class 1b), Mexiletine (class 1b), Spartene (class 1a)
  • Serotonin 5-HT3-receptor antagonists (eg Ondansetron, Tropisetron)
  • Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (eg Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine)

German Chamomile essential oil is generally found to be non-toxic and non-sensitizing, and relatively safe for use on the skin. A few studies suggest an unfavourable reaction to high dilution rates of this oil when applied to the skin – specifically amongst people with known sensitivity to fragrances.
