Information on Galbanum essential oil

Galbanum essential oil is extracted from the gum resin of  Ferula gummosa (synonym F. galbaniflua) of the Apiaceae/Umbelliferae family. Common names for Galbanum include galbanum gum, giant fennel and Persian galbanum.

Galbanum is also used as a fixative in perfumes.

Galbanum is an ingredient in an ancient incense called Qetoret – this was used in the ancient Jewish temple and Galbanum is mentioned in the book of Exodus in the bible.

Galbanum was imported from Persia by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks for its medicinal uses.

Oil Properties

Galbanum essential oil is steam-distilled from the gum resin and has a green, fruity-floral odor reminiscent of fine malt, with traces of Pine. Some sources report a bitter scent and an intensely green, musky odour.

Origin

Galbanum is the gum resin obtained from Ferula Gummosa, found in the Middle East.  The essential oil is mainly produced in Turkey and Iran.

The stem of the herb is cut and and the resin bleeds into tears and lumps of brown to greenish, yellow-brown colour.

Extraction

Our Galbanum essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the crude gum.

Chemical composition

Some of the main chemical components are β-Pinene, δ-3-Carene, α-Pinene, Sabinene, (+)-Limonene

Precautions

As with most essential oils, this essential oil should be kept in a dark and cool place and should be stored in an airtight glass bottle (Preferably in the fridge at a temperature of around 4° Celsius / 39°  Fahrenheit) to prevent oxidation.

Therapeutic Properties

The therapeutic properties of Galbanum essential oil are emmenagogue, restorative,  analgesic, tonic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, balsamic,  aphrodisiac,  carminative,  digestive, diuretic, expectorant, hypo-tensive, restorative and cicatrisant.

Uses

Galbanum essential oil is mostly used in inhalation therapy for its calming effect and also to reveal truth and encourage soul-searching – to ‘discover ones truth’.

Galbanum essential oil is excellent for treating skin conditions, is said to help heal wounds and bring relief in indigestion, breathing problems and to encourage blood circulation.

Burners and vaporizers

In vapor therapy, Galbanum Essential Oil can be helpful with introspection, meditation and to calm the emotions. It is said to be able to help reveal inner truths that may also be unpleasant.

Blended Massage Oil and in the Bath

As a blended massage oil or diluted in the bath, Galbanum essential oil will assist with healing of skin conditions, respiratory problems, indigestion and painful lower legs, feet and hands.

Blended in Cream

In a cream or lotion it is used to treat inflamed or infected skin conditions and painful lower legs, feet, hands and wrists.

  • Most professionals and/or Aromatherapists will always err on the side of safety when giving advice regarding the use of essential oils and oleo resins during pregnancy.
  • Quite a number of Aromatherapists advise that you should avoid all essential oils completely while pregnant, specifically during the first trimester. This is a very safe approach but may not be necessary at all.
